  • MARINE FIELD RESEARCH COURSE DESCRIPTION

  • I am excited to have been successfully enrolled in the popular Ransom Everglades Upper School 2023-2024 Marine Field Research course taught by Dr. Kelly Jackson and Dr. Brooke Gintert. Since I have a strong passion for protecting the environment, this course covers an area of study that I have been looking forward to pursuing.

Marine Field Research is an interdisciplinary, hands-on research course that combines the physical waterfront location of Ransom Everglades and the marine research expertise of the science faculty. Through unique, signature field research experiences, students immerse themselves in the natural environment of our campus, Biscayne Bay, nearby coral reefs and South Florida by learning to plan and conduct fieldwork, collect and analyze data, and present their research.

Students are exposed to field research techniques spanning topics in marine biology, marine geology and oceanography. Students learn to scuba dive and earn their PADI® Open Water Diver certification during the course. Students are assessed based on hands-on projects, data collection and analysis and presentations of field data.

Students will also have the opportunity to work with the Coral Restoration Foundation, an organization dedicated to actively restoring coral reefs on a massive scale, educating others on the importance of our oceans, and using science to further coral research and coral reef monitoring techniques.

  • SCUBA CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • The PADI® Open Water Diver course is the world’s most popular and widely recognized scuba diving certification. The course is divided into three phases:

    • Phase 1: Knowledge Development; Learning about the scuba equipment, familiarizing yourself with scuba terminology and watching videos of diving skills.
    • Phase 2: Confined Water Dives; Practicing basic diving skills such as clearing water from your mask, ascending and descending.
    • Phase 3: Open Water Dives; Learning to dive by diving to a maximum depth of 18 metres/60 feet and completing four open water dives with the instructor by your side.

As of September 13, 2023, I have successfully passed Phases 1 and 2 of the certification process. After completing the required four open water dives for Phase 3, I will become a certified PADI® Open Water Diver.

Once I have achieved this accomplishment, I will include an additional section - Course Dive Log - to this page that details my activities during the various scuba dives planned throughout the Marine Field Research course this school year.
